Abstract

The retina is derived from the two layers of the invaginated optic vesicle. The outer layer becomes a layer of cuboidal pigment epithelium and the inner layer forms the other nine layers of the retina (the neural retina).Aging is a complex biological phenomenon that leads to a gradual impairment of vision and deterioration of the retinal cells and optic nerve axons. The present study was designed to clarify the prenatal and postnatal developmental changes in the albino rat retina and optic nerve axons as well as the effect of aging on their structures.
Forty-five male and female albino rats at different ages were used in this study. The animals were divided into two groups as follows:I- Prenatal group (group I):In this group, twenty adult male and female albino rats (10 males and 10 females) were used and put with each for mating. The pregnant females were sacrificed after 7, 14 and 21 days of gestation and their embryos and fetuses were subdivided into three subgroups:(Five in each subgroup) as follows :Subgroup I A: embryos aged 7 days Subgroup I B: fetuses aged 14 days Subgroup I C: fetuses aged 21 days
