Abstract

Primary open-angle glaucoma is described distinctly as a multifactorial optic neuropathy that is chronic, progressive, and irreversible, with a characteristic acquired loss of optic nerve fibers.
Cataract extraction results in an apparent increase of the macular & RNFL thickness with significant changes in optic disc tomography .
Phacoemulsification helped remove the thick lens which blocked the aqueous outflow inside the eyeball, opened the angle of the anterior chamber, improved aqueous outflow, and ultimately lowered the IOP. This study supports phaco as one procedure of choice for glaucoma treatment and should be done in any retinal disorders which have a greater potential of damage and can bring further difficulties if the procedure is delayed.
OCT is a method allows non-contact and non-invasive examination of the nerve fiber layer of the retina and the optic nerve head inside the eye through the use of coherent light tomography scan of the nerve fiber layer of the retina with pinpoint accuracy.
RTvue-OCT can detect glaucomatous changes affecting the RNFL Thickness, ONH parameters. There were no significant correlation was found between the extent of IOP reduction and any change in RNFL OCT parameters or percent change in RNFL OCT parameters, but there is significant correlation between the extent of IOP reduction and percentage change in macular thickness &optic nerve head parameters after phacoemulsification.
