Abstract

Role model can enable students to discover knowledge embedded in clinical practice. Working with and observing a mentor enables students, through a process of reflection, to internalize their mentor’s behavior and build on previous knowledge and experience. Role modeling is especially important during clinical experiences where students learn how to relate to patients, assess the situation, and make decisions.
The aim of this study was to identify nurse students’ perception regarding characteristics of nurse teacher as a role model, assess assistant faculty staff members’ perception regarding characteristics of nurse teacher as a role model, and comparing between the two study subjects’ perceptions regarding characteristics of nurse teacher as a role model.
The current study was conducted at faculty of nursing Ain Shams University. Subjects of the study included 65 assistant faculty staff members from different scientific departments and 195 nurse students who enrolled in fourth year at academic year 2016/ 2017. Data for this study was collected using role model questionnaire sheet, it was developed by the researcher based on review of related literature Cruess (2009), Australia nurse teacher society (2010), Kameoka (2011), and ochemsen, (2013).It consists of two parts:
Part 1: This part consists of two different sheets:-
The first sheet aimed to collect data related to nursing student characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, pre-admission qualification, etc.
The second sheet aimed to collect data related to demographic characteristics of assistant faculty staff members such as age, gender, marital status, position, qualification, … etc.
Part 2: This part aims to assess study subjects’ perception regarding characteristics of nurse teacher as a role model. It consists of three domains; Personal qualities which consists of five sub items , Teaching skills which consists of three sub items , and Clinical competence which consists of three sub items .
The present study revealed the following main results:
Majority of nurse students and assistant faculty staff members had high perception level regarding all characteristics of nurse teacher as a role model
”personal characteristic domain ” was the highest perception level of nurse students ( 96.9%) and assistant faculty staff members ( 98.5 ) .While ”clinical competence domain” was the lowest perception level of nurse student (92.8%).The lowest perception level of assistant faculty staff members (95.4%) was ”teaching skills domain”.
The study recommended the following:
o Faculty of nursing have to develop a variety of teaching plans and learning activities that foster creativity and innovation of nursing practice and the health-care environment.
.
o Enhancing professional growth of nursing students through transferring professional attitudes and behaviors from nursing teachers to the students.
