Abstract

Environmental pollution by insecticides which used in agriculture has economic importance on aquatic culture. Endosulfan is one of organochlorine insecticides which reach to fish through water. It is highly toxic to fish even if present in very low concentration. Thus, it should be used in restricted manner.
For studying the toxic effect of endosulfan with or without lycopene supplementation, a total number of 180 apparently healthy alive Oreochromis niloticus fish with an average body weight (25 ± 0.5 g), obtained from Abbasa fish hatcheries at Sharkia province divided into 4 equal groups; each group had three replicates (15 fish/replicate):
1st Group: Control group.
2nd Group: Exposed to 1/20 (12.795 µg/L) 96 hrs LC50 of endosulfan added to aquaria.
3rd Group: Fed on basal diet supplemented with 600 mg/kg diet of lycopene.
4th Group: Fed on basal diet supplemented with 600 mg/kg diet of lycopene and in the same time exposed to 1/20 (12.795 µg/L) 96 hrs LC50 of endosulfan added to aquaria.
The experiment was performed for 4 weeks. In the end of the fourth week, serum samples were taken for biochemical analysis of ALT, AST, ALP, total protein, albumin, globulin, IgM, lysozyme, NO and hematological parameters.
Also, liver samples were taken and divided into three parts. First part was for measurement of oxidative biomarkers including; CAT, SOD, GPX, GSH and MDA. Second part was formolecular analysis of CYP 1A and GST mRNA expression. Third part of liver, gills and spleen samples were taken for histopathological examination.
