Abstract

The Competent performance requires not only basic knowledge and skills but also beliefs of personal efficacy to utilize both of them effectively, many researchers in the educational settings are increasingly drawing attention to the students’ thoughts and beliefs role in the learning process .In this study we focused on one particular type of personal belief: self-efficacy. Self-efficacy means ‘beliefs in individual’s abilities to organize and execute the action required to achieve given attainments.
In the clinical setting, the students often experience situations which can develop stress and anxiety. Students with a higher sense of self-efficacy are more likely to select challenging activities which would increase their learning and enhance their skills to be a doctor.
The Clinical instructor needs to understand how self-efficacy can affect the student’s performance. How the clinical instructor interacts and responds to the students can either enhance or decrease the students’ belief in themselves to be successful.
All the fifth year undergraduate students (n=154) were involved in our study. The study was conducted in Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University, in Ismailia governorate. All the six clinical rounds were included (ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Orthopedics , Tropical , Psychiatry)
This is a correlational and predictive study, where the clinical instructor’s roles and students’ self-efficacy used to predict the academic achievement of the students. The role of the clinical instructor and the students’ self-efficacy (in the clinical practice) considered as predictor variables, whereas the academic achievement was the criterion variable.
This study assessed the perception of undergraduate students (fifth year) towards their self-efficacy, and assessed their perception toward the role of their clinical instructor Then, the relationships between students’ self-efficacy, role of their clinical instructor, and their academic achievement were explored.
