Abstract

In our study we aimed to assess depression and anxiety in hearing impaired children and adolescents. Our study included 20 children with different degrees of hearing impairment (group I) and 20 children with normal hearing which serve as control group (group II).
In our study we excluded children with any other significant clinical disorders which can affect psychometric analysis especially cognition or cause depression nor anxiety as children with intellectual disability or children with well known developmental disorder as (Autism, ADHD …etc) or children with significant clinical disease as (Diabetes, Uremia …etc.), we excluded also children with epilepsy.
All children included in the study were subjected to clinical history taking, complete examination, psychometric evaluation, E.E.G, audiological evaluation as well as psychological (Depression and Anxiety) questionnaires.
Our study showed:
• No significant difference between hearing impaired group and control group in age, residence and socioeconomic status.
• As regarding the relation between A.B.R and I.Q there was no significant difference between hearing impaired group and control group.
• Statistically significant increase of abnormality in E.E.G in HI group than control group.
• As regarding the presence of anxiety there was significant increase in HI children than NH children.
• A significant increase of depression between HI group than control group.
• There was no significant difference between group I (HI children) and group II (controls) in relation between E.E.G and I.Q. Classification.
• There was no significant difference between group I (patients) and group II (controls) in relation between anxiety and I.Q Classification.
• As regarding the relation between depression and I.Q classification there was no significant difference between HI group and NH group.
• Our study showed that there was a significant increasing the incidence of moderate anxiety and depression than mild anxiety and depression in the hearing impaired children greater than NH children.
