Abstract

Background: Peripheral Intravenous cannulation is an invasive procedure which predisposes the patient to an increased risk of local and systemic infection from micro-organisms introduced either at the time of insertion or when in situ. Peripheral Intravenous cannulae related infections are associated with increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization and increased costs. Nurses should maintain meticulous care during following insertion of peripheral Intravenous cannulae to reducing risk of infection. Aim of the study: The aim was to determine the effect of training program on nurses’ performance regarding infection control in caring for patients with peripheral intravenous cannulae. Two study hypotheses were tested. Hypothesis 1: There will be statistically significant higher mean score of nurses’ knowledge regarding infection control in caring for patients with peripheral intravenous cannulae after than before training program. Hypothesis 2: There will be statistically significant higher mean score of nurses’ practice regarding infection control in caring for patients with peripheral intravenous cannulae after than before training program. Methods: The sample: a convenience sample of all available nurses included 80 nurses at Suez Canal University Hospital in Ismailia. Questionnaire sheet and observational checklist was utilized to collect data pertinent to the study. Results: The study revealed that after program implementation there was a significant improvement in the knowledge items regarding infection control in caring for patients with peripheral Intravenous cannulae. Also after program implementation, there was a significant improvement in the practices items regarding infection control in caring for patients with peripheral Intravenous cannulae. Conclusion: Enrichment of nurses’ knowledge and practice would have positive impact up on their knowledge and performance. Recommendation: Well planned orientation and in-services training program on the knowledge and practice and proper supervision is recommended.
