Abstract

To estimate the presence of Toxoplasma infection among patients with psychiatric illness attending to Minia Psychiatric Hospital. To compare between patients with psychiatric illness and subjects without psychiatric illness as control for the occurrence of infection with Toxoplasma. To investigate effect of Toxoplasma infection on the course and outcome of psychiatric illness.
Based on the overall sample which include 200 subjects, the mean age of them was 34.6±9 years old; Most of patients were female (53.5%; n= 107) and slightly more than half were married (52.5%; n= 105), More than half of patients (48%; n= 96) were unemployed,71% (n= 142) were resident in rural areas and 73.5% (n=147) lives in a very low social level. It was found most sub-diagnoses were 21 (14 %) patients had schizophrenia disorder, 18 (12 %) patients had manic episode disorder, 16 (10.6 %) patients had obsessive compulsive disorder, 14 (9.3 %) patients had schizoaffective disorders and 12 (8 %) patients had bipolar affective disordersAccording to ICD-10 guidelines for diagnosis of mental and behavioral disorders. There were 36 patients (24%) with less than one year and with more than 20 years duration of illness,With the mean age at onset of disorders in patients is 20.2±13.8 while 57.3% (n= 86) of patients involved in the study had no history of previous psychiatric hospitalization, also 42% (n=84) subjects had Toxoplasma infection compare to 58% (n=116) hadn’t infected with it, There was strong statistical significance between psychiatric illness, gender and frequency of admission and Toxoplasma infection. The most important thing we can see in the comparisons between the diagnosis of patients and Toxoplasma infection, and 48.7% had psychotic disorders especially schizophrenia , 29.5% had mood disorders and 21.8% had neurotic disorders and this differences are high statically significant, There is a very highly significant correlation between severity of Toxoplasma infection and diagnosis of patients, the subcategories diagnoses and the predominant symptoms in the patients also found a strong association between Toxoplasma infection and the symptoms ofvisual hallucinations, disorganized speech, inflated self esteem, decrease need for sleep, depressed mood, pre occupation of serious illness, sleep disturbance.
