Abstract Decision making could be influenced by organizational factors and readiness to change in the work environment. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate decision making ability among head nurses and its relation to their readiness to change in Port Said general hospitals. Subject and method: The study was carried out at Port Said General Hospitals using a descriptive correlational design on 92 head nurses with more than one year experience. A Self structured questionnaire of Decision Making Ability and Readiness to Change was used for data collection. Results: Head nurses’ age ranged between 26 and 60 years, mostly had diploma degree (80.4%), females (98.9), and married (90.2). The total decision making score median was (3.72). The score of total readiness to change median was (3.46). Significant positive correlations shown between the total decision-making score and the score of the total readiness to change. In multivariate analysis: The total experience years was the only positive predictor of the score of decision-making ability. The score of decision-making ability was a positive predictor of all domains of readiness to change. Conclusion and recommendation: The head nurses have low decision making abilities but better readiness to change. The decision making is an important of all domains of readiness to change. To be promoted to managerial job positions, nurses need to attend training courses to enhance their decision making ability and to focus on the importance of change and how to manage it. |
