Abstract

Decision making could be influenced by organizational factors
and readiness to change in the work environment. Aim: The aim of this study
was to investigate decision making ability among head nurses and its relation to
their readiness to change in Port Said general hospitals. Subject and method:
The study was carried out at Port Said General Hospitals using a descriptive
correlational design on 92 head nurses with more than one year experience. A
Self structured questionnaire of Decision Making Ability and Readiness to
Change was used for data collection. Results: Head nurses’ age ranged between
26 and 60 years, mostly had diploma degree (80.4%), females (98.9), and
married (90.2). The total decision making score median was (3.72). The score of
total readiness to change median was (3.46). Significant positive correlations
shown between the total decision-making score and the score of the total
readiness to change. In multivariate analysis: The total experience years was the
only positive predictor of the score of decision-making ability. The score of
decision-making ability was a positive predictor of all domains of readiness to
change. Conclusion and recommendation: The head nurses have low decision
making abilities but better readiness to change. The decision making is an
important of all domains of readiness to change. To be promoted to managerial
job positions, nurses need to attend training courses to enhance their decision
making ability and to focus on the importance of change and how to manage it.
