Abstract

Ocular trauma is of great concern and interest worldwide and several studies had held covering all aspects of ocular trauma. However, still rapidly growing with increasingly effective new developed techniques for prevention and treatment make it a large field of research until now.
Our study is a prospective epidemiological study involving cases of ocular trauma at the outpatient ophthalmic clinic and emergency cases presented to ophthalmology department, Menoufia University Hospitals within one year period (Jan 2016 - Dec 2016). In our study, we described the mechanisms, injury characteristics and causes of ocular trauma in Menoufia governorate of Egypt.
Our final analysis included (1129) patients sustaining ocular trauma with (1138) eye injuries (9 cases had a bilateral injury). The incidence of ocular trauma in Menoufia University Hospitals was found to be )6.1%(. The mean age of ocular trauma patients was (22.4) years (range: 3 months - 80 years), the majority (66.1%) aged 30 years and younger, the pediatric age group was (24.3%), while adults constituted (75.7%). Males constituted (69.1%) whereas females constituted (30.9%) with a male to female ratio of (2.2:1).
Most of the patients (49.5%) were came from Shibin El Kom city and its affiliated villages, Quesna came second by (20.5%). (75.6%) of the patients were presented in the first 24 hours from injury, whereas (24.4%) of patients show delayed presentation.
The majority of the patients were students (31.4%) and workers (30.2%), followed by housewives (15.5%) and farmers (8.2%). The street represents the main site of occurrence of ocular trauma.
