Abstract

S
leeve Gastrectomy is an effective treatment option for obesity associated T2DM. In this study 42.5% of patients (n=17) developed T2DM remission. So, proper patient selection is important to optimize maximal benefit with successful treatment of T2DM.
Different preoperative factors in the form of clinical and biochemical factors were evaluated to detect which of these factors represent predictive factors for remission of T2DM following SG that would be useful for the bariatric multidisciplinary team.. These factors include: Age, Sex, BMI, duration of diabetes, Preoperative antidiabetic medications, Preoperative HbA1C and preoperative fasting blood glucose.
The major findings are older age, long history of diabetes, insulin use, and poor glycemic control in the form of high levels of pre-operative HbA1C and fasting blood glucose can be assumed to be negative predictors for failure of diabetes remission in the short-term postoperative course. Moreover, the results of this study indicated that gender and baseline BMI do not play a role in diabetes remission.
It may be impossible to identify the most important single predictor as most of the clinical and biochemical predictive factors described above are inter-related to one another. For example a longer duration of diabetes is associated with increasing age; the need for insulin therapy is associated with a long duration of diabetes; a long duration of diabetes and poor glycaemic control is associated with poor pancreatic beta cell reserve
