Abstract Objectives: Was to evaluate the association between umbilical artery Doppler study and perinatal outcome in low risk pregnant women with abnormal cardiotocography during labor. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Banha University Hospital , Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. Population: 120 women with uncomplicated pregnancy were classified according to cardiotocography (CTG) findings during the active phase of labor into, 60 cases with normal CTG (group 1) and 60 cases with pathological CTG (group 2). Colour Doppler study of the umbilical artery (UA) was performed for both groups and the results were correlated to perinatal outcome. Main outcome measures: Meconium stained amniotic fluid, emergency Cesarean deliveries for suspected fetal distress. Apgar score at 1 and 5 min, and the need for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. Results: In the pathological CTG group 9 (15%) cases had high UA Doppler indices with adverse perinatal outcome, while 13 (21.7%) cases underwent emergency cesarean section for fetal distress, and 20 (33.3%) cases their babies need NICU admission. Normal UA Doppler indices were seen in all cases with normal CTG group, while 3 (5%) cases underwent emergency cesarean section for obstructed labor, and 11 (18.3%) cases their babies need NICU admission Conclusion: UA Doppler study in combination with ctg as apart of intrapartum fetal monitoring in low risk pregnancy might give additional useful Information about fetal condition and suspected fetal hypoxia Key Words: Cardiotocography , Doppler , and perinatal outcome. |
