Abstract

Aim of the study:
1-To assess of the nutritional status of preschool children in rural and urban areas in Saada Governorate, Yemen.
2-To identify the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight in urban and rural preschool children in Saada Governorate, Yemen.
Results:
The results of the study revealed that: 41.7% of fathers of studied children can read and write and 61.8% of them were farmer. about 50.5% of mothers of studied children can read and write.
Regarding feeding practices, the results revealed that majority of studied preschool children (80.2%) were breast fed and 19.8% of studied children were artificial feed.
The overall percentage of stunting, wasted and underweight were 8.5%, 23.3% and 12.7% respectively. Severely stunted preschool children were 88.7% and severely wasted children were 15.6%. While 80.7% of studied preschoolers were severely underweight. Generally, by using these three indices, malnutrition is higher in younger age group (less than 59 month) and slightly higher in boys than girls.
As regards family type: nuclear were 62.3% and 37.7% were extended.
Using mid-upper arm circumference in detecting the nutritional status of preschoolers was found that 59.8% of urban children had severe malnutrition by (MUACZ) compared to 37.5% of rural ones.
