Abstract

Summary
Erectile dysfunction is defined as permanent inability to achieve or
maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse for a
period of at least 6 months.
Diabetes has been associated with corpus cavernosum smooth
muscle changes, such as increased connective tissue synthesis and
atrophy of smooth muscle within the corpus cavernosum bodies in
humans and animal models. These structural changes are correlated with
an increased incidence of veno-occlusive dysfunction and erectile failure
consistent with peripheral vascular disease seen in diabetes. Diabetes is
associated with intimal, medial, and luminal changes within the artery
leading to atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is a multifocal, smouldering, immune-inflammatory
disease affecting mainly medium and large sized arteries. There is
growing evidence that, in addition to traditional risk factors, vascular
wall inflammation, adverse clinical vascular events play a key role in
pathogenesis of vascular disease and atherosclerotic process.
Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the association between
diabetes and changes in the penile doppler ultrasonography in patients
with erectile dysfunction. Also, the influence of factors like control of
diabetes, duration of diabetes and presence of diabetic related
complications on Doppler parameters. We used ultrasonographic
parameters to evaluate the link between duration, control of diabetes on
the cavernosal arteries by determining PSV, EDV, RI, internal diameter,
IMT and AWMI of cavernosal arteries. In order to accomplish this aim,
the assess the association between diabetes and changes in the penile
doppler ultrasonography in patients with erectile dysfunction. The.
