Abstract

This thesis aims to throw more light on the possibility of utilization of
coarse carbonate aggregates in concrete mixes. To achieve this goal, the
carbonate aggregates have been subjected to mineralogical,
petrographical and geochemical investigation as well as physiomechanical
tests. Petrographically, the carbonate aggregates of Gabal
Ataqa are dolomicrite and dolosparite microfacies while those of Gabal
El-Kaaud are sandy lime-mudstone and wackestone/ packestone
microfacies. Mineralogically, XRD revealed that the carbonate
aggregates at Gabal Ataqa quarry consist mainly of dolomite with minor
calcite, whereas the carbonate aggregates at Gabal El-Kaaud quarry are
mainly made up of calcite besides quartz as minor constituent.
Chemically, the studied aggregates of Gabal Ataqa quarry have high
MgO content, relative to those of Gabal El-Kaaud that have high CaO
and SiO2 content. Physical mechanical tests on concrete of coarse
carbonate aggregates revealed that the carbonate aggregates of Gabal El-
Kaaud quarry increase in porosity, water absorption and crushability with
decrease in its bulk density and compressive strength. This is in a
comparison with those of Gabal Ataqa quarry. The carbonate aggregates
of Gabal Al-Kaaud quarry suffered from more deterioration by acids
(HCL and H2SO4) than those of Gabal Ataqa quarry.
