Abstract Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE ( is a frequent complication of liver cirrhosis; it is severely affecting the patients’life and their caregiver with significant morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. So, nurses must be knowledgeable about care and treatment of HE which improve survival outcome with fewer complications among patients in intensive care units. Aim of the study: Asses’ nurses` performance regarding management for patient with hepatic encephalopathy. Design: A descriptive exploratory design was utilized. Setting: This study was carried out in medicine intensive care units 1, 2 and medicine ICU 3 (Endemic) at Ain Shams University Hospital. Study subjects: Convenient sample of all available nurses (45) were included in the study. Data collection tools: Data were obtained through nurses’ knowledge questionnaire, nurses’ observational checklists and Likert rating scale for nurses’ attitude.Result : It’s found that 82.2% of studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge regarding management for patients with hepatic encephalopathy and 100% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of practice regarding hepatic encephalopathy. Meanwhile, 100% of the nurses under the study had negative attitude toward management for patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Conclusion : The majority of studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge regarding management of patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Meanwhile, all the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of practice regarding hepatic encephalopathy. All the nurses under study had negative attitude toward management of patients with hepatic encephalopathy. There was no statistically significant correlation between knowledge, attitude and practice among the studied nurses P>0.05. Recommendations: Designing in-service training and educational program to improve nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding hepatic encephalopathy. The study should be replicated on large sample and in different hospitals setting in order to generalize the results. |
