Abstract

The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the reasons behind the influential evolution of Alexandrian literature on art. It takes on two related directions. First it discusses the art theory that should have provided the basis of the ensuing principles for practicing art in Alexandria. It should give explanation to the meaning of art according to ancient Greek thought. It should also provide information about the way where the visual arts and literature converge. In this chapter ancient art theory is followed from Plato to Aristotle. Art theory is important because its development points to the orientation that has left its impact on Alexandrian arts. The second part of the chapter concentrates on the innovative features in Alexandrian literature; its new themes and its newly created genres. Some works of Alexandrian poets are

introduced focusing on the most important characteristics of Alexandrian poetry which relate to the topic discussed by this thesis.
Chapter two is devoted to Alexandrian art. I will give an introduction about the characteristics of Alexandian art. Then I will some pieces of art. They are suggested as Alexandrian motifs in the light of the aesthetics that will be surveyed in Alexandrian poetry. They are classified according to the art terms. Some are well known artifacts found in Alexandria. Most of them are Roman copies of Hellenistic originals. They were not excavated in Alexandria.
Chapter three is an analytic investigation. It aims to define possible Alexandrian aesthetic criteria. The work in chapter three is based on the examination of the varied genres of Alexandrian poetry versus the apparent look of relevant visual arts. Three proposals are represented. The first is based on the introduction of Aristotle theory of art mentioned in chapter one. Alexandrian art was greatly influenced with pertinent themes in poetry and therefore it is obvious in the selective pieces of art. A second proposal deals with the luxury and wealth of the society and its influences on art. Its physical manifestation is confirmed by its echoe in poetry. A third one lies on the Egyptian tradition and civilization. Due to the physical location of Alexandria in Egypt, the ancient Egyptian culture must have marked Alexandrian culture. The Egyptian element is supposed to be strongly present in Ptolemaic Alexandria.
A conclusion summarized and included the evaluation of Alexandrian culture based on the study of the works of some prominent poets and ancient authors and their impact on Alexandrian art.
