Abstract In order to expand the service life-time as well as to eliminate some drawbacks associated with the use of conventional dry joint connection in precast bridge construction, a new generation of precast composite bridge deck slab is proposed and investigated. The idea of the present work is based on utilizing the beneficial properties of strain hardening cementitious composites (SHCC) in order to improve both of the flexural performance of bridge deck slab and, the shear behaviour of panel-to-panel connection. The proposed precast composite bridge deck slab consisted of U-shaped SHCC layer filled with Normal Strength Concrete (NSC). The superior characteristics of SHCC were utilized at the soffit of the precast composite bridge deck slab and at the transverse panel-to-panel connection. The SHCC is expected to enable the composite deck to improve its overall structural performance in terms of flexural capacity, serviceability, durability, corrosion resistance and permeability. In addition, the use of SHCC dry joint to connect the separate panels is expected to increase the interfacial shear resistance of the joint. |
