Abstract The leakage of petroleum products contaminates the soil and changes its physical and mechanical properties because of the hydrocarbons present in.These hydrocarbons infiltrate into the soil through the pore spaces and collect at the top of the ground level. Thus, the knowledge of the geotechnical properties and behavior of contaminated soils is required. The present study is a part of a laboratory program aims to greater understanding of the influence of five different petroleum contaminants on the geotechnical properties of soils. The laboratory tests included basic properties;Atterberg limits, consolidation and unconfined compression tests. All of which were carried out on clean and contaminated natural soi(High plasticity clay).Contaminated specimens were prepared by mixing the soil in dry case with different contaminants contents(2, 4, 8, 10 and 16)and water content equals the optimum water content obtained from proctor test. Results showed significant variations in the main soil properties. Also, the effect of the contaminated soil on a two meters wide strip footing were numerically analyzed via PLAXIS program. The variables were the type of contaminant, the contamination percent, and the contaminated layer thickness. |
