Abstract

Sexual dysfunction is a common symptom of depression. Although decreased libido is most often reported, difficulties with arousal, resulting in vaginal dryness in women and erectile dysfunction in men, and absent or delayed orgasm are also prevalent. Sexual dysfunction is also a frequent adverse effect of treatment with most antidepressants and is one of the predominant reasons for premature drug discontinuation.
We aimed in this study to evaluate the sexual function of males and females with bipolar I disorder during remission phase and it’s impact on their partners.
Our study demonstrated that the depressive symptoms were associated with hypo sexuality in both sexes.
In conclusion, bipolar disorder is associated with impaired sexual function of both sexes. Interestingly, the manic symptoms in the female cases are not associated with hyper sexuality and the mean score of pain is higher in the female cases than the controls. Otherwise males with manic episodes associated with delayed ejaculation. Also, there is a positive correlation between the diseased females’ satisfaction during intercourse and their partners IIEF score. Finally, we recommend further studies to replicate these findings and use a larger sample size of the patients.
