Abstract

This study aimed to compare and monitor the quality of treated water
between two different sewage treatment plants in Menoufia governorate (Quesna
activated sludge and Berket El Sabee trickling filters plants). This study was
carried out in the period of December 2015 to November 2016. The results of the
study showed a significant increase in the determinants of pollution in the influent
water of plants under study. It is a predictable result of untreated wastewater and
reflect the danger of discharge of this water to water bodies without treatment. A
total of twenty-one parameters were assessed in the physico-chemical analysis of
the water samples. Most water samples exceeded the permissible limits in
Egyptian code physico-chemical standard for wastewater, except temperature, pH,
total dissolved solids, sulphide and heavy metals. All raw sewage and treated
water samples of two WWTPs were positive for total coliform, fecal coliform and
E. coli bacteria. The seasonal variations showed that indicator bacteria have
different variations during the period of study. In this study different individuals
of zooplankton (Protozoa and rotifers) vary in their response to seasonal changes
in the physical and chemical nature of water. It was highlighted on some of
pathogenic free-living Amoebae (Acanthamoeba - Naegleria) in treated water
samples because they are important in maintaining the occupational safety of
plants’ workers. Finally, the performance of Quesna WWTP, works by activated
sludge system, has more efficiency in treatment of wastes than Berket El Sabee
WWTP which works by trickling filter system. So, it could be possible to
recommend the replacement of the trickling filters by the activated sludges to
obtain the more better wastewater treatment.
