Abstract

In this study twenty four patients, twenty five cases with distal radius fractures were treated at the orthopedic surgery department in Menoufia University. Mean age was 35.3 years (ranged from 19 years to 53 years). Twenty one cases were males (84%) and four cases were females (16%). The fracture was in left side in 17 cases (68%) and in right side in 8 cases (32%). The most common mechanism of injury was falling on out stretched hand 17 cases (68%) and motorbike accident 6 cases (24%). All fractures were closed. According to AO classification there was one case A2, three cases A3, five cases B3, nine cases C1 and seven cases C2. All patients were treated by MIPO technique through two incisions, the distal one on the proximal wrist crease and proximal one lateral to flexor carpi radialis tendon at the level of the proximal two or three holes of the plate.
The period of follow-up was ranged in 9 months. According to Gartland and Werley scoring system, nine cases got excellent score (36%), thirteen cases got good score (52%), two cases got fair score (8%) and one case got poor score (4%). Factors affecting the final end results: a) Satisfactory end results were achieved more in young patients than in old patients. b) Sex did not affect the functional end results. c) Dominant side fracture shows better results than that of non dominant. d) No clear correlation between the grade of AO classification & the end result. e) The interval between the fracture and the operation was within 1 week which had no significant effect on the functional results, because the interval period range in this study was not a long period which can disturb closed reduction that MIPO maneuver depends on it. f) Statistical analysis of the result showed that there is no correlation between the occupation and the end result of operation. g) Statistical analysis of the results showed that there is no correlation between the mode of trauma and the end result.
