Abstract

Pneumonia is still the most common cause of death in children under five years of age. This is most significant in developing countries, where incidence rates are up to ten times greater than in developed countries.
Cortisol is considered as useful biomarker for the prognosis of pneumonia. Salivary cortisol is not protein bounded as in serum, reflecting free cortisol, as though to be more accurate. It is non invasive method in children.
This study was conducted at inpatient department of the Pediatric hospital, Ain-shams University and Abassya Chest Hospital, done for 50 child attending with clinical or radiological findings of pneumonia. They were 19 males (38%) and 31 females (62%) with female to male ratio 1.6:1.
All the patients in this study have been subjected to detailed history taking, clinical, radiological and Laboratory assessment which include non specific hematological investigations (CBC, ESR, CRP) and specific test as salivary cortisol measured using ELISA.
