Abstract

The elderly are an assorted population group whose number is growing at a considerably faster rate in the total population. Aging and systemic disease and their treatments can influence function and oral health.
There is much interest in the oral health problems of the elderly and its influence on nutrition. Poor oral health has a negative impact on dietary intake and nutritional status when the capacity to chew and eat is diminished.
The present study estimated the prevalence and distribution of the oral lesions based on clinical diagnosis in a sample of 395 geriatric Egyptian individuals living in elderly homes and assess and correlate their oral health and nutritional status using standardized assessment scores;
1) Comprehensive general and oral assessment was done using a designed chart adapted from World Health Organization Oral Health Assessment Form for Adults, 2013
2) Geriatric oral health assessment Index (GOHAI) was used to assess elderly oral health self-perception.
3) The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used for assessment of patient self-perception of health and nutritional status.
The results of the present study revealed statistical significant
difference
As regards prevalence of dental disorders, the results of the present study showed that most of the participants had carious lesions (59.5 %) and missing teeth due to caries (61.5 %) followed by root caries (24.3 %) and remaining roots (32.7 %), while those who had missing teeth due to other reasons than caries (13.2 %) had the lowest percentage.
On investigating the prevalence of the presence of pathological changes, the highest percentage suffered from ulcerative lesions (14.2 %), tongue related lesions (13.4 %) followed by white/Red lesions (12.9 %), while those with pigmented (9.9 %), exophytic (7.1 %) and denture related lesions (4.1 %) had the lowest percentage.
The results of the present study revealed that there was a significant association between nutrition and presence of majority of mucosal lesions mainly ulcerative lesions, white/red lesions, denture related lesions, tongue lesions and exophytic lesions, but there was no significant association between geriatric oral health and the presence of majority of mucosal lesions.
