Twenty of these thirty cows were suffering from fever, anorexia, anemia, increase in respiratory and heart rates, pale to icteric mucous membranes and hemoglobinuria, these cows were diagnosed to be infected with Babesia and this diagnosis was confirmed by detection of intra-erythrocytic stages of the Babesia in Giemsa stained blood film and PCR. The other ten cows were clinically healthy.
The hematological findings in this study revealed a marked decrease in the mean levels of RBCs, HCT%, Hb concentration and MCHC and increase in MCH and MCV values in Babesia-infected cows when compared with healthy control that suggested a macrocytic hypochromic anemia. On the other hand there was a significant decrease in WBCs, lymphocytes and neutrophils counts and a significant increase in eosinophilsa long with a sharp decrease in platelets were observed in infected cows when compared with healthy control.
The biochemical findings of cows infected with Babesia when compared with healthy control revealed a significant increase in serum ALT, AST and ALP activities that indicate a hepatic dysfunction. In contrast significant decrease in the serum levels of.
