Abstract Summary This study was carried on 42 patients, aged 18 or above, who presented by first attack of status epilepticus at our Department of Neuropsychiatry and center of Psychiatry and Neurology Tanta University Hospitals during a 6-month period started from July 2016. Patients with previous history of SE were excluded. The aim of the work was to assess is to assess the possible etiologies and risk factors of first attack of status epilepticus in adults. The studied patients were categorized to 2 groups according to their response to AEDs - group A: 35 patients with non-refractory status epilepticus. - group B: 7 patients with refractory status epilepticus Studied patients were subjected to: History taking including the personal history and possible risk factors Neurological and general clinical examination Radiological studies: CT and/or MRI brain for each patient (additional imaging may be needed for individual cases e.g.: MRV) Electrophysiological studies: Continuous EEG monitoring for at least 6 hours in the first 24 hours after admission. Routine laboratory investigations including arterial blood gases, complete blood picture, prothrombin time and activity, international normalized ratio, liver & renal functions, lipid profile and further lab investigations were ordered for each case individually (e.g. ESR, CRP, CSF analysis, … etc.) |
