Abstract

writing is not only grammatically correct, but also cohesive and coherent. The analysis in the above chapter tells us that due to lack, misuse or overuse of discourse markers become less cohesive and less coherent. We cannot say discourse markers are devices for written Islamic discourse, but we cannot deny they have a great effect on the cohesion and coherence of writing. Discourse markers tell us about the linguistic properties of a set of frequently used expressions and the organisation of social interactions and situations in which they are used. ACDMs function as one of the cohesive devices between words and sentences. Attention should be paid to them. They should not be under estimated or ignored. Discourse markers are devices that people understand and interpret the intended meaning or message, by referring to the relationship among sentences and discourse. If we did not use discourse markers properly the meaning would be changed. Hence, DMs serve to make the relationship between two sentences better than it would otherwise have been. The study paid attention to and concentrated on five ACDMs in written Islamic discourse produced in Friday sermons and compared them with their counterpart in English. These ACDMs are /lakin/, /bal/, /lakinna/, /baynama/ and /wa maça }a:lik/. They can be roughly translated in English as but. Special attention has been paid to their syntactic distribution and semantic meanings to determine whether they share certain characteristics and to find the subtle differences that might occur among them. Besides, this study provided the reader with a detailed description of the syntactic and semantic characteristics of those ACDMs to be able to use them correctly and accurately. So it contributes to the study of DMs by concentrating the analysis on the five ACDMs under investigation as they appear in Arabic and compares them with English but. Also, it paid attention to the characteristics they share and the various ways in which they are distinct from one another.
