Abstract

At our retrospective study, we had reported 100 cases of fracture neck femur, 44 cases were male and 56 female. Their age range was from 28 to 67 years.
Time of surgery was reported up to 48 hours. The overall rate of AVN was 20% and the overall rate of non-union was 13%.
Significant difference was found between functional outcome in the early group and patient’s age, AVN, non-union and timing of the surgical intervention and significance was found between functional outcome in the late group and AVN, non-union and timing of the surgical intervention.
Surgical timing is an important factor with anatomical reduction in this type of fracture and patients should be operated as early as possible.
Most importantly, regardless of the fixation method used the patient should be informed that with fixation he/she will be exposed to a high risk of non-union, avascular necrosis and femoral head collapse and therefore an increased risk of requiring additional procedures.
