Abstract Over the years, researchers have examined many approaches in machine foundation analysis and design. Most of this research has mainly dealt with a single machine foundation. A few studies have investigated flexible foundations. These studies indicated that a package of multiple machines can be used as an effective tool in oil and gas industry to ease the operation process. So many numerical and experimental research has been carried out in the past few decades to study the machine foundations field. A lot has been done to improve the understanding of search area. Many engineers have a lack of knowledge in studying foundation supporting multiple machines. The present work seeks to develop a better understanding of multiple machines supported by flexible foundation. The core themes of this research are to conduct numerical investigations on the steel skid foundation supporting multiple air Compressors. In order to examine their behavior and effectiveness. Two parametric studies are undertaken to investigate the influence of the major factors of the machine foundation system. These parameters affect the vertical vibration characteristics of the pile response. The first parametric study is about a rigid foundation rested directly on soil supporting a rotating machine is performed on this thesis. The parametric study is done to study the impact of several parameters on the resulted vibrations, damping and stiffness. These parameters are including soil and foundation parameters. Another parametric study is performed using ANSYS software V. 18.1. A rigid foundation on piles supporting an air fan machine is by changing different parameters such as software parameters, foundation and machine parameters. The study examined the influences of these parameters on the resulted vibrations in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, modal analysis is made to check the natural frequency of the system. The resulted vibrations are transformed from time domain to frequency domain by MATLAB. The core theme of this research is to conduct numerical investigation on the flexible machine foundation supporting three air compressors. The design was considered first with no surrounding beams to examine the model`s efficiency. By comparing the resulted vibrations on the sensitivity chart, it appeared that the vibrations are in a dangerous are for the human and the machine itself. So steel beams were added to surround the steel skid. A 3D numerical model in the time domain utilizing the finite element package ANSYS was developed for this purpose. The proposed system was then evaluated and compared based on sensitivity chart. Moreover, the resulted vibrations are transformed from time domain to frequency domain through Fourier analysis by MATLAB software. The natural frequency of the system is checked through modal analysis. Besides, a transient analysis is performed to obtain the vibrations caused by the system. |
