Abstract Background: The role of fungal biofilm is poorly understood compared with bacterial one. We have developed a study of biofilm in patients with fungal sinusitis trying to discover its role in recurrence of infection, resistance to treatment and occurrences of complications. Methods: 60 patients were enrolled in the study divided into 40 patients with fungal sinusitis and 20 patients as controls. Specimens were undertaken during endoscopic sinus surgery and sent for biofilm detection by scanning electron microscope. Results: 35 fungal sinusitis patients were positive for fungal biofilm with no biofilm detected in controls. Conclusion: The available data show that there is strong evidence of biofilm formation in fungal sinusitis cases with more aggressive nature of disease in recurrent &biofilm positive patients.
