Abstract

Physiological changes of pregnancy expose women to risk of developing sleep disorders such as decreased quality of sleep, decreased duration of sleep, insomnia, snoring and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) .
The objectives of this study are to assess sleep patterns between pregnant women attending Tanbisha Family Health Unit and verify risk factors for sleep disturbances between the studied participants.
This study was conducted in the context of time frame of 21 months (starting from the first of July 2016 to the end of March 2018) on three hundred healthy pregnant women (aged from 19 to 45 years) who were chosen from those who attended Tanbisha Family Health Unit for ante-ntal care. They were interviewed face- to-face using a predesigned questionnaire that divided into sections:
1. The first part consisted of personal and sociodemoghraphic data.
2. The second part for assessment of obstetric history of participants.
3. The third part consisted of 20 items for assessment of sleep disturbances which involved three domains : physical, psychological and social problems affect sleep disturbances.
from this study it was found that:

2) About two thirds of the studied pregnant women had moderate sleep disorders (68% ),24% had mild disorders and only 8% had mild disorders.
3) There was a highly statistical significant relation between the degree of severity of sleep disturbances and age of studied participants(p<0.001). There was a statistically significant relation between the degree of severity of sleep disturbances , education and occupation .
4) There was a highly statistical significant relation between degree of severity of sleep disturbances and both of gestational age and gravidity of studied participants(p<0.001).
5) There was a highly statistical significant relation between gravidity and all domains of physical sleep disturbances among the studied group(p<0.001).
6) There was a highly statistical significant relation between the trimester of pregnancy and physical, psychological domains and total score of sleep disturbances (p<0.001).
7) There was a highly statistical significant relation between physical sleep disturbances and the trimester of pregnancy.
8) There was a highly statistical significant relation between the trimester of pregnancy and feeling with fetal movement (p<0.001) .
