Abstract

Background: Malnutrition in children is a global public health problem with wide implications. Malnourished children have increased risk of dying from infectious diseases, and it is estimated that malnutrition is the underlying cause of 45% of global deaths in children below 5 years of age. It is also increases susceptibility to infections while infections aggravate malnutrition by decreasing appetite, inducing catabolism, and increasing demand for nutrients. Aim of the work: To evaluate the effect of honey supplementation on malnourished infants and children regarding anthropometric measurements and serum leptin level. Patients and Methods: Fifty infants and children of both sexes, aged 6 months to 3 years, with malnutrition were consecutively recruited from the Nutrition Clinic of the Pediatric Hospital, Ain Shams University, Egypt during the period from December, 2016 to October, 2017. The grading of malnutrition was based on WHO z scores. Results: At baseline, the three studied groups were comparable as regards the sex, age and residency. Also, the two malnourished groups 1 and 2 were matched as regards the serum leptin level and the anthropometric measures and their Z scores, but, as expected, these anthropometric measures were significantly lower in the malnourished groups 1 and 2, as compared with healthy group 3. Also, the serum leptin level was significantly lower in the malnourished groups 1 and 2, as compared with the healthy group 3. Conclusion: Honey is effective in nutrition rehabitation with improvement of anthropometric measures regarding (weight and mid arm circumference) also it had effect on appetite (increase caloric intake).
