Abstract Umbilical cord carries nutrients and oxygen from the mother to the foetus through the placenta during pregnancy. These stops at birth, however, when the new born establishes its own blood circulation, the umbilical stump vessels fibroses and desiccate, thus becoming a potential site for infection. The umbilical cord is an important bacterial colonization site, which may occasionally lead to neonatal infection such. The infection of cord stump delays cord detachment and consequently the cost of postnatal care and duration of hospitalization may unnecessarily increase. The application of the rigorous and proper clean cord care programs, therefore, has become necessary for the prevention of cord infection.Research design: Quasi experimental research design has been used The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of topical application of human milk compared to 70% ethyl alcohol on umbilical cord separation time in Newborns. The study was conducted at Main Tanta University Hospital El Hamoul central hospital in kafr El-Shiekh . A convenience sampling of 50 newborns with matched criteria were selected from postpartum department from previously mentioned settings and divided randomly into two equal groups as follow:Control group1- (Ethyl Alcohol care group ) consisted of 25newborn Study group2-( Human milk group ) consisted of 25 newborn Two tools were used for data collections.Tool I: Assessment schedule for the newborn and their mothers:It was developed by the researcher after reviewing literature it consisted of: I.
