Abstract

The treatment processes for the liquid effluents disposed into rivers have become essential
necessitating high costs and large investments. This is the major constraint involved in the
problem of pollution control. The main objective of this dissertation is to fmd the optimwn
design for pollution control in rivers using dynamic progralnming. That is to maintain the
permissible water quality levels at all points in the river by treating water with minimwn cost.
A combined approach is developed to obtain the optimwn solution for optimizing the problem of
pollution control in rivers. It employs both the dynamic programming and the linear progralnming in
such a manner to obtain the required optimwn solution. It is applied to two models and the optimwn
solutions are achieved.
A case study that represents a river subject to pollution is defmed. Three models are established
.using the linear programming, the dynamic programming with recursive computations and the combined
approach. The optimwn solutions are obtained by the PC, analyzed, discussed and compared. It is
concluded that the developed combined approach is an effective tool for optimizing pollution
control in nvers.
An appendix is included to re.view the standards for the ermissible limits for both the liquid
effluents and the natural aters in some countries. Also, another appendix is included to llustrate
the application· of the combined approach to four ater quality models.
