Abstract One of the maj6r problems for expansions of aquaculture activities in Egypt is the availability of protein sources. The present results of feeding experiments indicated that Oreochromis niloticus fry grew fast when fed with modified formula compared with the communally used supplementary feed. In order to evaluate the quantity and quality of the protein in Spirulina platensis culture and also to improve growth rate; the optimum growth condition, outdoor mass culture, nutritional value of Spirulina platensis are determined to investigate the food value of this alga for feeding Oreochromis niloticus fry. The high protein, amino acids and vitamins contents of Spirulina are urgently needed for large-scale production of supplementary feed for fish. Spirulina is able to contribute solving the problem of availability of protein sources of supplementary feed. So we can exploit these advantages to produce non-confidential supplementary feed not only for increasing fish production but also for saving the aquatic environment. |
