Abstract Objective: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) has been described in hemodialysis (HD) patients and has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in patients undergoing regular hemodialysis. Methods: This prospective study was conducted in Ain Shams university hospital from April 2017 to December 2017. Thirty cases of end stage renal disease (ESRD), on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) underwent transthoracic Doppler Echocardiography and assessment of pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) was done. Pulmonary hypertension was defined as, pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) greater than 35 mm Hg at rest. The effect of AVF, age, duration of dialysis, Diabetes, hypertension on the development of pulmonary hypertension was observed. Results: Among 30 patients, 16 patients (53.3%) had pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension was present in 16 (80%) patients with AVF. Pulmonary hypertension was more common in hypertensive patients, there was significant correlation between pulmonary hypertension and duration of hemodialysis. Diabetes, anemia and HCV had no relation to development of PH. Conclusion: ESRD patients on HD have tendency to develop PH. This study demonstrated that PH is more common among males. Duration of hemodialysis, AVF and hypertension have strong relation to the development of PH. |
