Abstract Nursing internship is a planned, supervised experience with gradual increase of responsibility, during the internship year, the interns gains practical experience which help her to be self assured practitioners. The transition from school education to work world is a critical process, so internship year is introduced to the student nurses for helping new graduates to adjust safely to the work environment by improving their skills and decreasing the reality shock. Aim of the study : This study aimed at assess level of performance of nurse intern of basic nursing procedures at the beginning and the end of the internship year. Subject and Methods : The study sample consists of 130 nurse interns who were training in different units at Ain Shams University Hospitals during the internship year · 1999/2000. The time period from September first 1999 to August 31, 2000. Data was collected by using an observation checklist which developed . by the researcher to assess level of performance of the nurse interns regarding vital signs measurement and administration of medication at the start and the end of the internship year. The list consists of 3 parts, the first one included demographic data, the second part entails data related to performance of vital signs measurement which contains 45 items, while the third part entails data related to performance of medication administration and included 14 items. Results: This study has the following results: • The majority of interns (92.3%) have completed their secondary school education before joining the faculty. • The majority of interns (80%) worked after joining the faculty while 32.7% of them worked in the second year of scholar education. • The frequency of performing basic nursing procedures is much higher during internship year than the different scholar years. • All the interns had adequate performance related to vital signs measurement at the end of the internship year. • Regarding performance of interns in measuring temperature, the main 3 items that got the highest correct performance were wash hands before procedure, rinse, dry and immerse thermometer in alcohol and record the reading in the patient’s chart (80%, 59.2%, 87.7%, respectively). • There are highly statistically significant difference rn measuring pulse and respiration between the start and the end of the internship year. • 100% of the interns at the end of the internship year, can apply cuff over the upper ann, close the value and deflate the cuff. Inadequacy of intern’s performance was found in items related to administration of medication at the start of the internship year but it increased and improved significantly at the end of the internship year. • Majority of the interns had adequate performance of oral medication, intramscular injection, intravenous injection and intravenous infusion (96.2%, 94.6%, 90%, 93%, respectively) at the end of the internship year. • There is a highly significantly improvement in interns’ performance at the end of the internship year rather than at the beginning. |
