Abstract

PC is one of the deadliest cancer types. Despite the progress in the fight against all cancers in the recent years, the prognosis of PC has remained poor. PC is still representing a scary malignancy especially in developing countries where all the limitations are gathered. Therefore, better understanding of the etiology and identifying risk factors for PC is essential for the development of preventive strategies. Accumulating data from research support the study of dietary groups to consider the overall impact of food group, rather than the individual effects of single nutrients and also facilitate dietary guidance and education of the population.
Aim of the study:
To determine the trend of PC in Minia Oncology Center during the period from 2009 to 2013 and also to evaluate the survival time and study the prognostic factors for PC mortality. The case-control study aimed to investigate the association between possible risk factors, including dietary elements and the development of PC.
Subjects and methods:
A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Minia Cancer Center including all patients diagnosed with PC from January 2009 to December 2013 in Minia governorate. The medical records were identified from the cancer registry database of the center and were analyzed retrospectively. Mortality data of the patients were obtained from the death records of cancer patients in the governorate.
Another case control study was conducted at Minia Cancer Center during the period from June 2014 to December 2015. This study included cases with a primary PC confirmed by the treating physicians and controls from the general population. All participants were interviewed in person by the investigator to complete the same questionnaire activity including data about demographics, medical disorders, reproductive history for females, family history of PC, physical activity, smoking and dietary history.
In accordance with the guidelines for human subject research, approval to conduct the study was obtained from Scientific and Ethical Committee of the Central Directorate of Research and Health Development of Ministry of Health and Population. Also, approval from Scientific Committee of Faculty of Medicine of Minia University was obtained.
Time schedule:
Preparatory phase and pilot study: 1 month (May 2014).
Field work and data collection: 18 months (June 2014-December 2015).
Statistical analysis and results: 12 months (January 2016-December 2016).
Writing the review: 6 months (January 2017 - June 2017)
Discussion, conclusion, recommendations and summary: 6 months (July 2017-December 2017)
