Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effect of using an instructional
grammar based program via role-playing on developing eighth graders‟ language
skills and learning motivation. The researcher adopted the two group -quasiexperimental
design and conducted a pre-posttest and a pre-post motivation scale
for the experimental group and for the control one . Participants of the study were
74 pupils from Samalout prep school for girls. Role playing strategy was used in
teaching the experimental group, while the conventional method was used in
teaching the control one. Tools of the study included: An achievement test on
language skills and a motivation scale. Results of the study showed that there was a
statistically significant difference (favoring the experimental group) between mean
scores obtained by the experimental and control groups in the post test of language
skills and there was a statistically significant difference (favoring the experimental
group) between mean scores obtained by the experimental and control groups in the
post-performance of the motivation scale. Based on those results, the researcher
recommends the necessity of implementing role playing strategies in teaching
English grammar to develop the four skills of English language and for increasing
learners’ motivation for learning English.
