Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS) is characterized by repetitive episodes of complete or partial airway obstruction leading to nocturnal sleep fragmentation and daytime symptoms (sleepiness), the prevalence of OSAHS in the middle-aged population ranges from 1-4% (1)
Sleepiness, depression, fatigue and obesity have an important impact on the person’s quality of life. Patients report problems in their social, professional and sexual relationships, as well as concerns about poor memory and a fear of dying. (4)
OSAHS represents not only a medical but also a social problem. Patients with OSAHS have increased utilization of health resources with higher healthcare costs. (16, 17)
Risk factors for OSAHS include non-modifiable risk factorswhich are male gender (19), post menopause women (21) and genetic factors (22) and modifiable risk factors which are excess body weight (23), alcohol (42), smoking (46) and nasal congestion (48).
Diagnosis of OSAS should be based on the combined assessment of clinical features together with objective sleep study findings. (125)
We aimed in this research to investigate the presence of airway inflammation in patients with OSAHS through performing sputum induction to study the inflammatory cellular profile and study the relation of airway inflammation to different clinical and polysomnographic parameters.
This study included two groups:
group 1: included 20 patients diagnosed with OSAS.
group 2: included 10 healthy subjects matched for age and sex as a control group presenting no risk of OSAS at the Berlin Questionnaire.
Each patient was subjected to the following:
History taking, clinical examination, pulmonary function tests, sputum induction and cellular profile.
group 1 included 11male and 9 females while group 2 included 6 males and 4 females with no statistically significant difference among the two studied groups regarding gender.
Our study revealed that there was no statistically significant difference among the two studied groups regarding age as the mean of age was (568.27&53.606.89 respectively) and the whole patients age in this study ranged from 42-67years.
All patients presented with snoring, witnessed apnea, unrefreshing sleep, morning laziness and morning fatigue. Recurrent arousals in 17(85%). Drooling in 14(70%).Nocturia in 13(65%). Morning dry mouth in 12 (60%). Morning headaches in 10(50%).Memory changes founded in 8(40%).Personality changes 7(35%). Enuresis in 4(20%).
