Abstract

Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The progression of atherosclerosis is influenced by genetic and environmental risk factors. A number of established risk factors, such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and smoking are significantly related to cardiovascular risk. Genetic factors may account for more than 50% of the risk for cardiovascular disease.
Atherosclerosis is the main cause of CAD. It is a disease of large- and medium-sized muscular arteries and is characterized by endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation and the build-up of lipids, cholesterol, calcium and cellular debris within the intima of the vessel wall.
IL6 is an unusual cytokine with documented proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory aspects (Adam J et al., 2014).IL6 has profound effects on the expansion and activation of T cells. T cells are both the sources and the targets of IL6.IL6 promotes CD8 T cell differentiation into cytotoxic T cells. Its level is influenced by some polymorphisms in the IL-6 promotor gene.
The aim of this study was to study the association of interleukin 6 174G/C genetic polymorphism with lipid profile in atherosclerotic coronary disease.
The current study was carried out at the Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Cardiology departments, Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University. Samples were collected from May.
