Abstract

BHS are common in childhood, defined as the child breathing stopping in expiration after a deep inspiration. BHS are benign in nature and prognosis and do not cause any demonstrable evidence on brain damage even if frequent spells occurred. However the psychological impact on the parents is great.
BHS appear during the first two years of age and rare before the sixth month of age and terminated by the school age. They usually proceeded by provocation that causes anger, fear or frustration.
Three types of BHS can be distinguished according to the prominent color changes during the attacks into:
1. Cyanotic (blue) BHS.
2. Pallid (white) BHS.
3. Mixed BHS.
Cyanotic BHS are more common than pallid BHS. The child cries for a few seconds and then appears to stop breathing in expiration and become rapidly cyanosed, the child then loses consciousness. If the heart rate is observed during the attack, it usually shows an initial tachycardia followed by bradycardia then rapid recovery occurs.
