Abstract

T1D is the most common chronic metabolic autoimmune disease. Several studies had shown that T1D is associated with metabolic abnormalities and alteration of immunoglobulins.
The aim of our study was to evaluate serum levels of IgA and IgG in children newly diagnosed with T1D and compare their levels with normal control children and with those with duration of T1D more than 5 years.
Our study included two groups; group I: included 70 patients who were diagnosed as T1D patients, and furtherly subdivided into two groups: group Ia (newly diagnosed) included 35 patients and group Ib (old diabetics) included 35 patients; and finally group II which included 30 apparently healthy children as a control group, age and sex matched to diseased group.
The studied groups were subjected to thorough history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including random blood glucose (RBG), glycosylated Hemoglobin (Hb A1c%) and serum levels of IgA and IgG.
As regard the results of the current study, we found that newly diagnosed diabetic children had significantly lower serum levels of both IgA and IgG than old diabetic ones. In addition, we found that serum IgA levels were insignificantly higher among newly diagnosed patients compared to control subjects. As regard IgG levels, newly diagnosed patients had significantly lower levels than controls.
In newly diagnosed diabetic children, we found insignificant fair positive correlation between IgA levels and dose of insulin, between IgG levels and BMI and between IgA levels and IgG levels. In addition, we found significant fair positive correlation between IgG levels and WC. In old diabetics, we found insignificant fair positive correlation between IgA levels and Hb A1c, and between IgG levels and duration of T1D.
