Abstract

The present work investigates the DC and AC electrophoretic deposition of nano-sized HAP composite coating on Mg-0.8wt.% Ca-3wt.% Zn alloy. Nano HAP powder was prepared using hydrothermal microwave assisted technique. HAP coating is deposited from dispersing medium (ETELAC) forming composite coating on the alloy surface and the factors affecting the deposition including zeta potential, conductivity, applied voltage, deposition time, concentration and stirring were studied. Electrophoretic deposition experiments were conducted as single run (S), double run (D) in case of DC-EPD wherein single run, double run and multirun (M) in case of AC-EPD. Nano powder was investigated using XRD. The properties of HAP coating regarding adhesion, morphology using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and corrosion behavior were thoroughly investigated. Results show that the best coating regarding the weight gain were obtained from DC-EPD while more dense and crack free coating morphology in case of AC-EPD. Electrochemical Impedance (EIS) and potentiodynamic investigation show that HAP composite coating possesses a high corrosion resistance compared to the substrate alloy and coated sample obtained using AC-EPD have more corrosion resistance than that of DC-EPD.
