Abstract

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is defined as a decrease in fetal growth rate that prevents a fetus from obtaining its complete growth potential. The most common pathological finding is gross and histopathologic evidence of uteroplacental vascular insufficiency. Aim of study to evaluate the effects of oral sildenafil on Utero-placental blood flow and determine whether sildenafil has a role in management of cases of IUGR. Patient and Method: prospective non-randomized controlled study included 50 pregnant women with gestational age between 24 to 36 weeks having singleton pregnancy and suffering from IUGR attending an antenatal clinic. Patients were divided into two equal groups. The treatment group patients received 50 mg Sildenafil t.d.s as a treatment. Results Sildenafil citrate can improve utero-placental perfusion in pregnancies complicated by IUGR. Conclusion Sildenafil treatment may offer a new opportunity to improve perinatal outcomes, for pregnancies complicated by IUGR.
