Abstract The study presents a comparative reading between W. B. Yeats and Amal Donqol. It depicts the similarities and differences in their style through the identification of Michael Riffaterre’s terms which are the hypogram, the matrix, the ungrammaticalities and the indirection. The study considers myth as the main code that the poem works within. Both rewrite the myth to expose current political and personal issues. The study is in two chapters, introduction, conclusion, appendix. Chapter one presents the theoretical background of the study. It exposes the development of the approach from Saussure till Riffaterre. It also discusses the concept of the code, its definition and categorization. The last part of chapter one focuses mainly on Riffaterre’s theory of semiotics. Chapter two presents an analysis of the poems of Yeats and Donqol. It is divided into three sections: the first one deals with Yeats poems (Leda and the Swan, The Second Coming, Cuchulain’s Fight with the Sea and The Songs of Wanderings Aengus). Each poem is summarized and analyzed separately. The second section deals with Donqol’s Poems 2 (Crying before Zarqa AL-Yamamah, Spartacus’ Last Words, A Special Interview with Noah’ Son and ‘Chapter Three’ from The Book of Genesis). Each poem also is summarized and analyzed separately. The last section provides a comparison between both poets. It compares their use of myth, their style and technique and the characters they use from mythology. Moreover, it compares The Second Coming with ‘Chapter Three’ from The Book of Genesis as both poems in specific have significant similarities. Through, the comparison, one finds that both use the myth as their main code. Both recall the characters from the myth to connect the past with the present. In addition to that, they use juxtaposition, irony and declarative sentences as main features of their poetry. The conclusion refers to their poems in general, their use of myth, their technique and the adaptation of the characters they call. It also shows how both are idealist poets who keep the romantic touch, yet still are modernist. |
