Abstract

Emergency nursing is one of the most challenging nursing specialties. This specialty requires that the nurses should up to date their knowledge, and clinical skills to give highly qualified emergency nursing care to the patient.
Aim of the study:
This study was aiming to:
Assessing factors affecting nurses’ performance in emergency unit.
Research Settings :
The study was conducted at the emergency unit of Ain Shams University Hospital.
Subjects :
Convenience sample of (40) nurses working in emergency unit in aforementioned setting. The sample consisted of 40 nurses (from both sexes).
Tools used to accomplish the aim of the study:
I) Questionnaire which included the following two parts:-
1) Demographic characteristics of nurses.
2) Nurses’ knowledge regarding ; emergency unit, Nurses’ role in emergency unit, emergency drugs, infection control measures and factors related to equipments and personnel which affecting nurses’ performance in emergency unit.
II) An observational checklist based on universal standard of emergency unit most common procedures. Each procedure checklist included pre-procedure, procedure, and post-procedure phase.
Pilot study:
The pilot study was carried out, for the purpose of testing feasibility and applicability of the tools used in the study, and the necessary changes was done.
Result:
The result of the study showed that:
More than half of nurses under the age of forty years, more than half of nurses were female and less than half were male. Regarding the educational level, the majority of nurses were technical institute nurses, in relation to the years of experience, it was found that half of nurses had experience less than ten years. As regards training courses, two thirds of them had no training courses about emergency. Generally more than half of nurses showed unsatisfactory level of knowledge, and all of them had agreed that personnel factors affecting their performance negatively in emergency unit . The majority of nurses had inadequate level of practice regarding emergency unit.
Conclusion:
Based on the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that; more than half of the nurses under the current study had unsatisfactory level of knowledge regarding emergency unit, and almost all the nurses agreed that the personnel factors affect their performance negatively in emergency unit (this result answer the first question). Moreover the majority of the nurses had inadequate level of practice regarding emergency unit (this result answer the second question). Moreover there are highly significant relation between nurses’ knowledge and training related courses, there are significant relation between nurses’ knowledge in relation to their age and their job categories. There are highly significant relation between total nurses’ knowledge and total of their practice regarding emergency unit.
Recommendation:
Based on the findings of the current study, the researcher recommends the following:-
1- Continuous evaluation of nurses’ knowledge and practice is essential to identify nurses’ needs and factors affecting their performance in emergency unit.
2- Close supervision and teaching on spot during work is needed to ensure that quality of care is provided by nurses to patients in emergency unit.
3- Developing continuous educational programs including evidence based guidelines based on needs assessment for nurses to improve their performance and quality of care regarding caring of patients in emergency unit.
4- Developing and availability of a simplified and comprehensive educational, guidelines, booklet, posters about nursing management for patient in emergency patient.
5- Giving nurses the power as much the responsibilities.
6- Conducting training programs about caring of patients in emergency unit.
7- An orientation program should be prepared to help newly appointed nurses to acquire, develop their knowledge and practice to deal with such group of patients.
8- Nursing curriculum must include theoretical and practical sessions related to emergency work for different nursing categories (diploma – technical- bachelor).
9- For administrative point of view; clear job description for nurses and sufficient number of qualified nurses should be provided throughout the three shifts for improving quality of care.
