Abstract

Avian influenza has become endemic in Egypt and causing serious threats to poultry production. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological situation of avian influenza virus in different poultry production sectors (backyard flocks, commercial chicken farms and live bird markets) in Suez Canal region during the period from January 2014 to December 2015. Samples were collected from different domesic poultry species ( chicken, ducks, geese and turkeys ).Viral RNA was exracted from the samples then subjected to real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), positive samples were further subtyped for detection of the H5, H7 and H9 genes. Our results verified that the highest incidence of AIVs was recorded in backyard flocks (48%) while in commercial chicken farms was (6.7%) during the study period. However, the lowest incidence of AIVs was deteced in LBMs (4.3%) In the examined backyard flocks, widespread of H5 positive cases was recorded. In contrast, in the surveyed commercial chicken farms and LBMs, the H9 positive cases were higher than H5 cases. Furthermore, concerning species, in the backyard flocks, the highest positive cases were detected in ducks and chicken (51%, 46.7%) respectively during the study period. While in the examined LBMs, the highest positive cases were recorded in turkeys (6.7%).
