Abstract

SUMMARY
This work aimed to:
Assess sexual function in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) in comparison with healthy married females, having a stable sexual function.
Methods of the study
Our study included 200 married women who were interviewed to answer FSFI questionnaire. The study consists of two groups. The first group included 100 women with RVVC (candidiasis group) while the second (control group) included 100 women. Women with RVVC were recruited from patients attending the gynecology outpatient clinic at the university hospital of Beni-Suef. The control group were healthy women (not known have lower genital tract dysfunction.) recruited from the gynecology outpatient clinic who have come as accompany to the patients and have agreed to participate in the study.
Patients were evaluated for: Personal history, obstetric history, history of medical diseases, complete history of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (number of attacks, medication) and FSFI questionnaire for both groups using the validated Arabic translated version.
The study revealed the following results:
The mean age of the patients was 28.9±7.11 years with a range of (19-44) years in candidiasis group and was 27±5.5 years with a range of (18-42) years in the control group. There was a statistically high significant decrease regarding the mean of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain domains and total score of FSFI in candidiasis patients compared to control group. The incidence of Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) was statistically significantly high in the candidiasis group compared to the control one.
Type of treatment used for RVVC showed non-significant effect on FSD. Also, we found that contraceptive method had non-significant effect on number of attacks.
Multivariate analysis revealed that age, education, residence, duration of marriage, circumcision, chronic diseases and number of living children showed non-significant effect on FSD in patient group, while Parity, number of RVVC attacks and type of treatment showed significant effect on FSD.
We concluded that FSD was higher with a statistical significance in candidiasis more than control women. Desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain domains were significantly lower in candidiasis patients compared to control group. So, the female sexual dysfunction is a common complication in women with RVVC.
