Abstract

Summary and conclusions
Clinical results after refractive surgery are evaluated according to efficacy, predictability, stability, and safety, as with every surgical procedures.
Preliminary data from several recent LASIK studies demonstrate good results and low rate of complications.
Our work included 51 eyes of 30 patients, 10 male and 20 female. Eyes with mean spherical equivalent of 12.34 D, mean sphere was 11.28 D and mean cylinder of 2.06 D.
LASIK was done in all eyes included in this study using the Alcon EX – 500 excimer Lasik
Preoperatively, and at each follow up visit, patients were examined to determine refraction, visual acuity, and presence of any possible complications.
Postoperatively, eyes showed mean spherical equivalent of refraction 1.45+0.96 D, Six months later, eyes showed mean spherical equivalent of refraction of 1.18 +0.85 D.
The mean regression was 0.275 D and it happened in only 8 eyes (15.7%).
In this study, 8 eyes (15.7%) showed postoperative complications.
In conclusion the refractive outcome after LASIK was generally close to the attempted correction with the best results obtained the less degree of myopia aimed for correction the remarkable stability of initial refractive outcome during the 6 months follow up interval and noticeable tendency for a rather limited regression the more the amount of myopia aimed for correction both in incidence and quantity.
Regarding correction of astigmatism, our scanning slit system was successful in correcting astigmatism up to -4.0 D with more predictable outcome the less the cylinder aimed for correction and remarkable long-term stability of results.
Visual acuity is considered one of the most important criteria used to assess the effectiveness of LASIK and the fact that 84.3% of our eyes had no regression 6 months postoperatively undoubtedly reflects why LASIK procedure has got such appealing reputation, letting most myopic patients generally doing well without spectacle correction after surgery.
Finally, we concluded that LASIK is a successful and safe refractive procedure for correction of a wide range of myopia and myopic astigmatism, however longer follow up is required to add more data needed to support the long-term stability of outcome of the procedure.
